Strengthening Jewish Day Schools Through Capacity Building

Day School Capacity
Building Initiative

Research studies have shown that children with a Jewish day school education are significantly more likely to identify with Israel, embrace their Jewish heritage and stay involved in Jewish activities throughout their lifetime.

This year, 36 BJE-affiliated Jewish day schools in Greater Los Angeles will collectively spend over $138,000,000 to provide quality Jewish education for 10,000 students in grades K-12. Approximately 40% of these enrolled students receive need-based financial scholarships.

The Day School Capacity Building Initiative was launched in 2005 by BJE and The Jewish Federation to help day schools and yeshivot enhance their business operations and strengthen each school’s operational capacity. Day schools can become even more viable and serve more children in our community if they adopt “best practices,” avoid liability, and enhance revenue development through pupil recruitment and retention and expanded financial resource development.

“This is one of the most exciting projects I’ve worked on.  It is living beyond our expectations and clearly meeting a tremendous need in the community.  We are also proud of the national attention this project has obtained.”

Mark Lainer, Chair, Day School Capacity Building Initiative
