Sulam: The Center for Jewish Service Learning

Aimed at teens, Sulam provides a wide range of quality volunteer opportunities and helps deepen connections to Jewish tradition through service to others.   With the three-part Service Learning model (community service, related study and personal reflection), Sulam provides resources that enhance the service teens do as an integral component of their personal and Jewish identity.

Sulam consists of a web-site, a resource library and consultative services provided by Rabbi Glenn Karonsky.

Sulam is Hebrew for ladder, in reference to Jacob's ladder (Genesis 8:12).  Just as Jacob’s ladder represented a connection between heaven and earth, The Center connects service with Jewish teachings and values.  Further, Sulam connects teens to their Jewish and own personal identity.

The 3 Components of Jewish Service Learning

1)     The actual community service

2)     Understanding the connection to Judaism through study

3)     Reflection - what does it mean to me and how is my community service an expression of my Jewish identity?
