Janice Tytell is a product of the Jewish educational system of Greater Los Angeles. She began attending religious school at age five in the San Fernando Valley, continuing on to graduate from Los Angeles Hebrew High School. She holds a B.A. in Hebrew from UCLA and three degrees from the University of Judaism; Jewish Literature (A.A.), Jewish Studies (B.A.) and her M.A.Ed.
Janice’s career in Jewish education began four decades ago, working as a Camp Ramah counselor and USY advisor. During her twelve years as a religious school teacher, she taught Hebrew and Judaic subjects in Grades One through Ten. She served as director of education in both Conservative and Reform congregations, and spent a year as Interim Director in a day school. She is a co-author of several Jewish educational publications.
This is Janice’s second time around as a BJE staff member. She served as Consultant to the Valley Region for five years before returning to school administration. She is now serving as Director of Complementary Jewish Education and Continuing Professional Education. In these capacities, she works with the Religious School Principals’ Council, facilitates all aspects of Religious School Accreditations and Affiliations, coordinates the annual Principals’ Retreat and annual Religious School Educators Conference, provides direct consultation to schools, creates and administers the agency’s continuing professional education courses and in-service opportunities, and disseminates information regarding available professional development locally, nationally and abroad to educators in BJE affiliated schools.
