Rebecca Spain, Director of Advancement, Brawerman East

To me, education is the foundation of Judaism; the religion, our people, the community, the culture, and without it, I don’t think we’d know who we are as a people and as a religion.

My family prioritizes Jewish education. Our children are future day school participants. We want them to grow up to be thriving Jewish adults, and we think the Jewish education system is a great way to ensure that. It’ll teach them to be both mensches, and intelligent people with valuable skills.

As part of our work at the Center for Excellence in Day School Education at BJE, we have assisted 16 BJE-accredited schools in raising funds through the Generations LA program. This program helps schools create endowment funds to provide long-term income. Ultimately, this income will partially fund the schools, offsetting costs, to make them more affordable and therefore sustainable. Going back to the word foundation; BJE helps schools to build a foundation for their futures, helping them keep their doors open forever. So by assisting the schools to do that, we’re building Jewish education in perpetuity.

Rebecca Spain was BJE Assistant Director of the Center for Day School Education and the Generations LA program until September 2018 when she left to become the Director of Advancement at Brawerman East.
