Governance and Board Development
BJE recognizes the importance of strong governance and volunteer leadership as a critical source of support to every school.
BJE’s goal is to provide support to the Board of Directors of these organizations in the areas of governance, board development, strategic planning, fundraising, and technology for fundraising outreach. Heads of School and Board chairs have expressed to BJE their desire for greater support in these areas. Some schools have taken advantage of one-day workshops and programs that BJE has offered during the 2015-16 school year (for example, New Trustee training, and Day School Lay Leadership Workshop) but there is a need for ongoing training and coaching for boards and their chairs.
With the generous commitment of several donors, including the Glazer Foundation, and several other funders, BJE is establishing a two-year program aimed at building stronger boards for stronger schools and more meaningful engagement of lay leadership. The format will be a combination of workshops and coaching in order to ensure support to lay and professional leaders in implementing change.
This new Board Development Series, coordinated by BJE, will bring in the expertise of well-established partners (e.g. Independent School Management, PRIZMAH, American Jewish University, BoardSource, Grinspoon Foundation) to provide training. The goal is to elevate the capacity of our schools’ leadership and governance to effectively meet the ever-escalating needs and develop a network of lay leaders who are committed to the long-term sustainability and growth of our Jewish day schools in Los Angeles.
This two-tiered program will include the following:
- Two full-day institutes twice a year – on in the fall and one in the spring
- Two webinars to provide ongoing training and follow up
- Board chair/president coaching/mentoring
- Possible topics to include: Head Support and Evaluation, Legal and Fiduciary Responsibilities of the Board, Succession Planning, Head of School/Board Chair Partnership, Fundraising Responsibilities, Board vs. Head Responsibilities, Strategic Planning
