Building Jewish Education Across Los Angeles

Reshet-LA is an effort by the URJ and BJE to stimulate and support innovation in synagogue schools in greater Los Angeles through workshops, mentoring, and a Community of Practice. The project is funded by the URJ and the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles.

Reshet-LA launched in July 2017, and has worked with 21 educators in 15 congregations to begin the process of transforming their religious schools. A partnership between the URJ and BJE-LA, the project developed a model with four stages: listening to their community; creating a vision based on their learnings; experimenting with models that express that vision; and creating an ecosystem and culture that sustains and supports ongoing transformation.

The program uses workshops to help congregations develop readiness for this type of change process and a deeper Community of Practice (CoP) for those prepared to engage in such a process. Members of the CoP attend additional sessions and receive regular coaching as participants in the program.  This year, we intend to continue to work with at least 9 of the current cohort, focusing on experimentation and creation and sharing of new models. Six new synagogues will be brought in as a second cohort of CoP members.
