Peoplehood & Identity: What’s Next for our Schools

The L.A. Jewish community has been buffeted by a variety of unprecedented challenges in recent years: COVID, economic/employment disruption, a mental health crisis among young people, decreasing membership in the organized Jewish community and, more recently, the October 7th terror attack on Israel, the ongoing war in Gaza, and increasing global antisemitism. These phenomena affect everyone in our school communities and create important questions – not just about what our immediate responses should be, but how we move forward as educational institutions.

On April 1, 2024, BJE: Builders of Jewish Education will convene Jewish part-time and day school administrators, leaders, youth professionals, clergy, partners, and experts to examine questions such as: How do we conceive of Jewish Education? What does it mean to be part of a community and the Jewish People? What defines Jewish identity? Where do L.A.’s Jewish schools and programs go from here?
